Crusaders defense sets tone against St. Thomas

CENTRAL CATHOLIC 54, ST. THOMAS AQUINAS 23  Katie Miller scored 13 points to help the Crusaders to a high school girls basketball win over rival Aquinas at Walsh University on Friday.

Sarah Miller and Jordan Fleenor added 11 points each for Central Catholic.

The Knights trailed 4-2 after the first quarter but Central Catholic outscored Aquinas 18-9 in the second quarter to take command.

Nicole Newman led Aquinas with seven points.

Vikings stay perfect with comeback

HOOVER 62, COEUR D’ALENE 56  Hoover used a big fourth quarter to rally past Coeur d’Alene and take a first-round victory at the Diamond State Classic girls high school basketball event in Wilmington, Del., on Friday.

The Vikings outscored the team from Idaho 23-13 in the final period to remain undefeated at 8-0. Coeur d’Alene dropped to 7-2 with the loss.

Senior Julie Worley used seven baskets and a 5 for 6 effort at the line to score a team-high 19 points.

Worley also grabbed nine rebounds to power Hoover’s inside game.

Kelsey Lensman canned a trio of 3-pointeres and finished with 14 points and Marquia Turner added eight points and six assists for the Vikings.

The Vikings will again play Sunday at 5:45 p.m. against St. Elizabeth (Del.), who are defending state champions.

Grace, Duffy power Polar Bears

JACKSON 47, NEW PHILADELPHIA 36  Jackson raced to a 21-4 lead after the first quarter before cruising to victory over the visiting Quakers during the Jackson Old Carolina Barbecue Classic.

Abby Duffy and Landrie Grace both scored 14 points to pace Jackson. Duffy grabbed

13 rebounds and Grace scored nine of points on three 3-pointers.

Hannah Angelo had seven assists for the Polar Bears.

Guyton’s big game gives Green triumph

GREEN 68, LOUISVILLE 59  Julia Guyton finished with a game-high 21 points to help lead the Bulldogs to a win over Louisville in the Old Carolina Barbecue Classic at Jackson High School.

Madison Jackson added a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds for Green (8-2).

Louisville got 17 points from Abby Beaver and 15 from Hollyann Mullett.

McKinley puts offense, defense together

McKINLEY 53, THURGOOD MARSHALL 25  McKinley used a huge second half to pull away from Thurgood Marshall for a convincing win in a game at Cincinnati Walnut Hills.

The Bulldogs defense allowed just 10 points after the break, while the offense put 33 on the scoreboard to help McKinley improve to 8-1.

Korrin Taylor led McKinley with 12 points and Ty Newkirk added 11.
