Times-Reporter staff report

COLUMBUS  New Philadelphia’s Jamal Johnson shared Division III Offensive Player of the Year honors as the 2013 Associated Press All-Ohio high school football squads were named Tuesday.

Johnson shared the top offensive award with Luke Kennard of Franklin and DeShone Kizer of Toledo Central Catholic.

Joining Johnson on the first team in their respective divisions from the area were Dover’s Cory Contini, Indian Valley’s Jake Davis and Fairless’ Hunter Wells.

Johnson was named the Eastern District Division III Offensive Player of the Year and is in the running for Mr. Football as he helped lead the Quakers to a 9-1 mark in the regular season and a third straight playoff appearance.

The 5-foot-6, 170-pound senior running back rushed for 1,963 yards on 247 carries and 26 touchdowns in 10 games.

Johnson, who ended up as the No. 6 rusher in history in the state of Ohio, also caught 21 balls for 343 yards.

Contini, a 6-1, 165-pound junior wide receiver, caught 78 balls for 1,361 yards and 24 touchdowns in Division III. He also ran the ball 24 times for 240 yards and also returned a punt for a touchdown.

Davis, a 5-9, 201-pound junior running back, was the Eastern District Division IV Offensive Player of the Year after piling up 1,658 yards on 253 carries and scoring 26 times during the regular season.

He scored 162 points to break his own school record and had only one fumble in 10 games.

Wells, a senior quarterback, was the Northeast Inland District Division V Offensive Player of the Year.

The 6-4, 185-pound Youngstown State recruit is Stark County’s career and single-season passing leader. He led the Falcons to their first playoff berth since 1999 and their first postseason win in school history. Wells completed 62.1 percent of his passes this season for 3,558 yards, 33 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Caleb Beans, Johnson’s teammate at New Philadelphia, was a second-team offensive selection, as was West Holmes’ power back Layne Perone. New Philadelphia’s Mark Barrow and Dover’s Mick Fishel made the second-team defense in Division III.

In Division V, Sandy Valley’s Logan Trbovitch was a second-team defensive selection and Cardinal teammates Lucas Dieffenbaugher and Andrew Lancaster were third-team picks on offense and defense, respectively.
