ASHLAND GlenOak High School senior Andrew Garman joined 22 others in signing with Ashland University.
The 6-foot, 205-pound linebacker was a three-year letterman for the Golden Eagles, earning All-Ohio this year after making 88 tackles, including 11 for loss and one sack.
Norwalk St. Paul’s Eric Schwieterman also signed with Ashland. The 6-1, 205-pound QB led his team to a Division VI state title last fall.
Kent State lists 20 recruits
KENT Head Coach Doug Martin welcomed 20 new members to the Kent State football program Wednesday.
Sixteen of the newcomers play defense. The offensive recruits include QB Cedric McCloud of Jacksonville, Fla., and running back Robert Holloman of Philadelphia. Eight of the signees are from Ohio, including Orrville High School senior Sam Miller, a cornerback and wide receiver and Poland safety Luke Wollet.
Bearcats sign running QBs
CINCINNATI Cincinnati Head Coach Butch Jones received commitments from a pair of multidimensional quarterbacks in his first 22-player recruiting class.
Munchie Legaux from New Orleans and Coy Kater from Michigan excelled in high school by running as well as throwing, a blend that Jones prefers.
The Bearcats won back-to-back Big East titles behind Tony Pike, a pro-style passer who seldom ran. Junior Zach Collaros, who is more of a running threat, will get the starting job next season.
Kelly adds pair to first class
SOUTH BEND, Ind. Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly added offensive tackle Matt James and defensive end Kona Schwenke to his first recruiting class, giving the Fighting Irish what analysts described as a solid but unspectacular class.
“It’s a very respectable class. Not a great one, but respectable,” said Tom Lemming, CBS College Sports Network recruiting analyst.
Kelly described the 23 signees as a good class, especially after he spent his first few days on the job working to make sure the five early enrollees would stay committed and then working to hold together the rest of the class recruited by Charlie Weis.
“It’s a good start for us,” Kelly said. “I think you’ll see a growth in the recruiting process for us next year. But I think it’s a good start for us.”
Recruiting analysts generally had the Irish out of the top 10 in their rankings, but in the top 25.
The highlight of the day was the announcement by James, who is 6-foot-6 and 291 pounds from Cincinnati St. Xavier, that he would play for the Irish. He surprised some by selecting the Irish over Ohio State, the first big recruiting win for Kelly and his staff.
